Del Mar gutters fill differently than inland gutters. There is almost no leaf load for most of the year, and then the eucalyptus and Torrey pines drop needles that mat into a felt layer that water sits on top of instead of running through.

Why six-inch gutters are common up here

It also means a different scoop and a different ladder standoff. Crews set up for five-inch tend to gouge the six-inch profile at the seams. We check the size before we quote, because a 180 linear foot six-inch run takes longer to clear and flush than the same footage in five-inch.

On a house off Stratford Court last winter, the downspouts were clear but the gutter itself held about an inch of standing water the whole length because the pitch had been lost during a fascia repair. What salt air does to Del Mar windows

Glass within a half mile of the water builds a salt haze that a squeegee and dish soap will not fully cut. It comes back within days because the residue attracts moisture.

When to schedule

October and early November, before the first real rain, and again in late spring after the pine drop. Homes near the fairgrounds and along Jimmy Durante Boulevard also pick up a fine grit through fair season that shows on glass more than anywhere else in town.
