Why do La Jolla gutters fill up faster than inland ones?

Torrey pines and the eucalyptus on the Soledad slopes drop year round, not in one autumn dump. Needles are the worst kind of debris because they knit together into a mat that water runs over instead of through.

On a Nautilus Street house last November the north gutter run held about four inches of packed needle mulch with ice plant sprouting out of it. The homeowner thought the gutter was fine because nothing was overflowing. It was not overflowing because the water had already found the fascia.

Most La Jolla homes built after the mid-90s run 6-inch K-style gutter with 3x4 downspouts. Older Bird Rock bungalows still have 5-inch, and a 5-inch run under a mature pine needs clearing twice a year, not once.

How we clear them without walking a tile roof

Barrel and S-tile crack under a boot, and a cracked field tile on a La Jolla roof is a $400 problem before anyone talks about underlayment. We clear from the ground with a water-fed pole system that reaches about 40 feet, and we only set foot on a roof when there is a walkable composition surface and no other option.

What salt air does to La Jolla glass

The marine layer sits until noon most of June and July. It carries salt inland, that salt dries on the glass as a haze, and a garden hose just moves it around and leaves mineral spots behind when it dries.

We rinse with deionized water at 0 TDS so there is nothing left in the water to dry into a spot. Ocean-facing panes in the Shores usually want service every three to four months. Street-side glass on the east slope of Soledad holds up six to eight months.

Screens come off, get washed flat, and go back on. Tracks get vacuumed. Sand builds up in the sill of any house within a few blocks of the water and it will grind the glass over time if it stays there.

Several Shores and Bird Rock associations want a certificate of insurance naming the association as additional insured before anyone touches the building. Ours issues in about a day. A few buildings also restrict work to weekday mornings, which is fine with us since the glass cleans better before the sun hits it anyway.
