Can You Pressure Wash a Wood Fence in San Diego?
Yes, but only at low pressure. We wash San Diego wood fences at 500 to 800 PSI with a wide 40-degree tip held about a foot off the boards, or we soft wash weathered cedar and redwood instead. High pressure gouges softwood, raises the grain, and strips old stain. A typical 100-foot fence runs 200 to 400 dollars.
A homeowner off Marlborough Avenue in Kensington called us after a handyman blasted his redwood fence at 3000 PSI. The boards came out furry. The grain stood straight up, two panels needed sanding, and the whole thing had to be re-stained before winter.
That is the mistake we see most. Wood is soft. Concrete is not.
Why High Pressure Wrecks Softwood
Cedar and redwood are the two most common fence woods in San Diego, and both are open-grain. A 3000 PSI tip held close acts like a chisel. It carves the soft spring growth out from between the harder grain lines and leaves a washboard texture that never fully smooths out.
We keep it gentle. A 40-degree white tip, 500 to 800 PSI, and at least twelve inches of standoff. We move with the grain, never across it, and we let the cleaner do the work instead of the water.
Pressure Washing vs Soft Washing a Wood Fence
On a fence that is sound but dirty, low-pressure washing is fine. On a fence that has gone silver-gray with mildew, we soft wash it instead.
| Method | Pressure | Best for | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low-pressure wash | 500 to 800 PSI | Sound, dirty boards | Raised grain if held too close |
| Soft wash | Under 100 PSI | Weathered, gray, mildewed cedar | Needs longer dwell time |
Soft washing uses a diluted cleaner that kills the mildew at the root. The wood comes back to a natural tone without any mechanical damage. It is slower, but on a 15-year-old fence it is the only safe call.
How Much Does It Cost to Clean a Wood Fence in San Diego?
Most fences we do run 200 to 400 dollars. A short 60-foot side yard runs closer to 150. A long property line fence with both sides exposed can hit 500.
Three things move the price: total linear feet, how weathered the wood is, and whether you want it sealed afterward. A clean-and-seal on the same visit adds roughly 1 to 2 dollars per square foot.
When We Tell People to Wait
Our marine layer matters here. If your fence sits in shade and stays damp through June gloom, do not seal it the same week you wash it. Wood needs to dry to under 15 percent moisture first, which in a shaded North Park side yard can take three or four dry days.
And if the fence is already failing, washing will not save it. We will tell you that before we quote it.
