Do Solar Panels Need to Be Professionally Cleaned?

Most San Diego solar panels lose 15-25% output from dust, pollen, and marine layer residue. DIY cleaning with a garden hose recovers some efficiency, but professional cleaning with deionized water and soft-bristle tools restores 95-98% of rated output without scratching the anti-reflective coating that protects your panels.

We get asked this on almost every solar job. The short answer: it depends on your roof pitch, how close you are to the coast, and whether you have trees overhead.

A flat-mount system in Clairemont collects grime faster than a steep-pitch array in Scripps Ranch. And panels within two miles of the ocean get a film of salt residue that a garden hose alone won't dissolve.

What DIY Solar Panel Cleaning Actually Looks Like

Grab a garden hose, spray the panels from ground level, call it done. That's the version most people try. And for light dust in dry months, it works well enough. No soap needed. No scrubbing.

The problem shows up with buildup. Bird droppings bake onto glass at San Diego's summer temperatures - we've measured panel surface temps above 150 degrees Fahrenheit in July. Hardened droppings don't rinse off. Pollen from eucalyptus and palm trees creates a sticky film. Marine layer moisture traps particulates overnight, and by morning the residue has bonded to the coating.

Scrubbing with household rags or paper towels risks scratching the anti-reflective layer. Once that coating is scratched, you lose efficiency permanently. We've seen panels with visible swirl marks from homeowners using dish soap and bath towels.

What Professional Solar Panel Cleaning Includes

Our process uses deionized water - we run tap water through a four-stage filtration and DI resin system that strips all minerals. Deionized water leaves zero spots or mineral deposits when it dries. Regular tap water leaves calcium spots that reduce light transmission.

We use soft-bristle rotating brushes rated for solar glass, on water-fed poles that reach rooftops from ground level. No ladders on your roof. No foot traffic on tiles. A 20-panel residential system takes about 35-45 minutes.

Cost in San Diego runs $150-300 for a typical residential system of 15-30 panels. Larger commercial arrays are priced per panel, usually $8-15 each.

When DIY Is Fine

Light dust. No bird activity. Panels you can spray from the ground without climbing anything. If you're in an inland neighborhood like Poway or Escondido with low tree coverage and your panels tilt at 20 degrees or more, rain and a monthly hose-off keep them reasonably clean.

Check your inverter app. If production is within 5% of expected output, you're probably fine.

When You Should Call a Pro

Production has dropped more than 10% from baseline. You see visible buildup - white haze, brown spots, streaks. Bird droppings have been sitting for more than a week in warm weather. Your panels are flat-mounted or on a second-story roof where hose reach is limited.

Coastal neighborhoods - Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach, La Jolla, Del Mar - need professional cleaning at least twice a year. Salt film is invisible but cuts output steadily.

Does Professional Cleaning Pay for Itself?

A 7 kW system producing 30 kWh per day at San Diego's average rate of $0.45/kWh generates about $405/month. A 20% efficiency loss from dirty panels costs roughly $81/month. One professional cleaning at $200 pays for itself in under three months.

And that's before accounting for the long-term cost of scratched coatings from improper DIY cleaning. Panel replacement runs $200-350 per panel installed.

We clean residential and commercial solar arrays across San Diego County. If your system's output has dropped and you want to know whether it's grime or a hardware issue, we can tell you on site. Request a free solar panel cleaning estimate or call us directly.
