How Often Should You Clean Solar Panels in San Diego?

Most San Diego homeowners should clean their solar panels once or twice a year. Homes near the coast or under trees need cleaning every 4-6 months. Panels lose 15-25% efficiency when covered in dust, bird droppings, or pollen buildup, and San Diego's dry summers accelerate that accumulation.

We started offering solar panel cleaning about two years ago after customers kept asking if we could handle their panels while we were already on the roof doing soft wash work. Turns out the same deionized water system we use for window cleaning works perfectly on photovoltaic glass.

The short answer on frequency: it depends on where you live.

What Affects How Fast Your Panels Get Dirty?

A flat-mounted array in Clairemont surrounded by eucalyptus trees is a different job than a steep south-facing install in Kensington with nothing but open sky above it. We've cleaned panels that lost measurable output in three months and others that looked fine after a full year.

The main factors:

  • Tree coverage -- Pollen, sap, and leaf debris. Jacaranda season (May-June) coats everything in a sticky purple film. Panels under jacarandas need cleaning right after bloom.
  • Bird activity -- Droppings are the worst offender. A single bird dropping can block an entire cell, and because panels wire in series, one blocked cell drags down the whole string.
  • Coastal salt -- Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach, Point Loma. Marine layer deposits salt film that doesn't rinse off with rain. These homes need cleaning every 4-6 months.
  • Roof pitch -- Steep roofs (30+ degrees) self-clean better in the rare San Diego rain. Low-pitch or flat roofs hold dust like a shelf.

How Much Efficiency Do Dirty Panels Actually Lose?

The studies say 15-25% loss from soiling. But what we see on the job is more specific than that.

Last month we cleaned a 22-panel system in Normal Heights. The homeowner had been tracking production through their Enphase app. Output had dropped from 38 kWh/day in the first year to about 29 kWh/day -- a 24% drop over 18 months of zero maintenance. After cleaning, production jumped back to 35 kWh/day within a week. Not quite original numbers (panels do degrade slightly each year), but close.

That 6 kWh/day difference at San Diego's average rate of $0.45/kWh is $2.70 per day. Over a year, that's roughly $985 in lost production. Our cleaning costs $150-$300 depending on system size. The math works.

What Does Professional Solar Panel Cleaning Cost in San Diego?

We charge $8-$15 per panel, with a $150 minimum. A typical 20-panel residential system runs $175-$250. Larger commercial installs get volume pricing.

For comparison, the DIY approach with a garden hose and squeegee costs you nothing in materials. But you're climbing on a roof, potentially voiding your panel warranty by using tap water (mineral deposits), and risking scratches from improper tools. Most panel manufacturers specify deionized water only.

Our Cleaning Process

We don't use soap on solar panels. No chemicals at all.

Our process uses a deionized water-fed pole system. The DI resin filters strip all minerals from the water so it dries without leaving spots or residue. We brush each panel with a soft-bristle head at zero pressure -- just the weight of the brush and flowing water. The whole system works from the roof edge or from the ground on single-story homes, so we're not walking on your panels or roof tiles.

For stubborn bird droppings or tree sap, we pre-soak the affected panels for 5-10 minutes with warm DI water before brushing. That handles 95% of cases. The remaining 5% get a second pass.

When Is the Best Time of Year to Clean Solar Panels in San Diego?

Late spring (April-May) and early fall (September-October).

Spring cleaning removes the pollen and dust that accumulated over winter. And since summer is peak production season with the longest days, you want panels operating at full capacity from June through September. Fall cleaning knocks off summer dust and bird droppings before the lower-production winter months.

If you only clean once a year, do it in April. You'll get maximum benefit during peak sun hours.
