What we found across nine Golden Hill walkways in May 2026
We power washed nine front walkways in Golden Hill during May 2026. Most were mixed surfaces: original brick edging and 1920s concrete pads. We ran 1,800 PSI on the brick at a wide fan and 2,800 PSI on the concrete. Average job took 90 minutes. Cost ranged $185 to $240 depending on square footage and stain depth.

Golden Hill is the oldest neighborhood east of downtown. The homes along 25th Street and B Street were built between 1910 and 1935, and the front walks still show it. Brick edging, hex-pattern concrete, original mortar joints. We can't run a turbo nozzle on any of it.
Why old brick forces us to slow down
Modern paver brick handles 3,000 PSI without complaint. The brick we cleaned on 24th and Beech was hand-laid sometime around 1928. The mortar between joints has eroded for a hundred years. Hit it with a turbo nozzle and chunks come out.
We dropped to a 25-degree tip at 1,800 PSI and worked at about 18 inches from the surface. That is slower work. A 40-foot walkway took 35 minutes instead of the 15 a modern paver job would take.
The concrete told us where to stop
Most Golden Hill homes have an apron of concrete between the sidewalk and the brick. The concrete is original. Spalling along the edges, some hairline cracks. We could power through it. We did not. We stopped at any spot showing prior patch work. Pushing past those spots opens them up and the homeowner pays for a new pad.
How much does power washing cost in Golden Hill?
The nine jobs ranged $185 to $240. The variables were square footage, depth of organic staining, and whether oxalic acid was needed on the iron-rich stains common around the older planter beds. Average was $210.

The historic overlay matters
Several blocks of Golden Hill fall inside the Golden Hill Historic District. We always confirm before any chemical work near old brick or stone. One owner on 24th Street had us paper-document the cleaning method for their renovation file. We were happy to. It takes ten minutes and protects everyone.
What we will not do in Golden Hill
We do not run hot water on soft brick. We do not use sodium hypochlorite at full strength near landscaping that has been there since the 1950s. We do not chase a stain past the point where the substrate gives way.
