What does it cost to pressure wash a block wall in San Diego?
Pressure washing a block wall in San Diego runs $1.00 to $2.25 per linear foot on a standard six foot wall, so a 60 foot run costs about $90 to $135. Painted or stuccoed walls get soft washed at 100 to 150 PSI instead. Heavy algae on a shaded face adds a chemical dwell and roughly 30 minutes.

Block walls are the job people add on after we have already quoted the driveway. Then they look at the wall and realize it is two shades darker than they remember.
Most of it is not dirt. On the canyon side of Talmadge and the College Area, the green-black cast on a north-facing wall is algae holding in the pores of the CMU, and it comes off with chemistry, not force.
Raw block versus painted block
Raw concrete masonry unit is porous and soft at the mortar joints. We run a 25 degree tip at 12 to 18 inches of standoff and keep the wand moving along the joint line rather than parked on it. Sit on a mortar joint at 3000 PSI with a 15 degree tip and you will cut a channel into it in about four seconds. That is a tuckpointing repair, not a cleaning.
Painted block is a soft wash. Same 100 to 150 PSI we use on stucco, with a 1 to 2 percent sodium hypochlorite mix and a 10 minute dwell. Anything harder lifts the paint at the hairline cracks that every San Diego block wall has by year fifteen.
The tell is a wall that looks fine from ten feet and shows spider cracking at three feet. That wall gets soft washed no matter what the homeowner asks for.

What we charge by wall type
| Wall type | Typical run | Price range | Method |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raw block, side yard | 40 to 80 linear ft | $90 to $180 | 3000 PSI, 25 degree tip |
| Painted block | 40 to 80 linear ft | $120 to $220 | Soft wash, 100 to 150 PSI |
| Stuccoed retaining wall | 30 to 60 linear ft | $110 to $200 | Soft wash plus rinse |
| Slump stone with efflorescence | any | add $75 to $150 | Acid rinse, neutralize |
Why the white streaks come back
Efflorescence on a retaining wall is not a surface problem. Water moving through the soil behind the wall pulls salts through the block and leaves them on the face as it evaporates. Clean it off and it returns as long as water keeps moving.
We tell people that plainly before we quote it. If the wall has no drainage behind it and no weep holes, the haze is on a six to twelve month cycle regardless of what we do.
The wall we washed off Adams Avenue two springs ago had a sprinkler head aimed straight at it. Fixing the head did more for that wall than the wash did.
Sprinkler rust is its own line item
Orange staining at the bottom 30 inches of a wall is iron from well-blended irrigation water, not dirt. It needs an oxalic-based rust remover, a dwell, and a full rinse of the planting bed underneath so nothing burns. That is $75 to $150 on top, and it does not always come out completely on porous slump stone.
Shared HOA walls have one more wrinkle. In most of the Clairemont and Scripps Ranch associations the wall belongs to both neighbors, so we clean the face on the paying side only unless both sides sign off. Cleaning half a wall looks odd for about a month until the clean side dulls slightly.
Full surface list is on our pressure washing page, and painted exteriors are covered under soft washing.
