What PSI do you need to pressure wash a driveway?
A San Diego concrete driveway cleans at 3000 to 3500 PSI run through a 15 to 20 inch surface cleaner. Painted stucco and wood need 100 to 500 PSI instead. Machines rated 4000 PSI do not clean faster, they cut the surface. Flow rate in gallons per minute moves more dirt than pressure does.
The number people fixate on is the wrong one.
Every rental counter and big box shelf sells on PSI, so customers ask us whether we bring a 4000 PSI machine. We run 3000 PSI at 4 GPM. The gallons per minute is what carries loosened dirt off the slab, and a 4000 PSI machine at 2 GPM will take twice as long on the same driveway while leaving wand marks.

Where the 4000 PSI machines actually earn their keep
Commercial degreasing. A restaurant dumpster pad that has never been cleaned needs hot water at 180 degrees plus a caustic degreaser with a 10 minute dwell, and there the extra pressure helps break a baked grease film that cold water at 3000 will not touch.
On a residential driveway it does nothing but risk. We have replaced sections of concrete for people who ran a zero degree tip across a 1950s slab in Talmadge and cut visible channels into the aggregate. That repair ran the homeowner more than a decade of professional cleanings.
What we changed after a job on Adams Avenue
We used to run 3500 on everything concrete. Then a walkway near 33rd and Adams came apart under the surface cleaner because the top layer had already carbonated and gone soft with age, something you cannot see until it starts shedding sand.
Now we test a two foot square in a corner first on anything that looks pre 1960. If it sheds, we drop to 2200 PSI and accept a slower pass. It adds 15 minutes and it saves the slab.
What a driveway job actually runs
A 400 to 700 sq ft driveway is $150 to $300 and takes 45 to 90 minutes. Oil stains add $75 to $150 because they need a degreaser and hot water rather than more force. Rust bleed from a sprinkler or an iron gate adds a separate acid treatment.
We quote flat, not hourly. If the slab takes two passes because the previous owner parked a leaking truck on it for five years, that is our problem, not a change order.
Renting versus calling someone
A day rental runs $80 to $120 and comes with a wand, no surface cleaner. Without a surface cleaner you will stripe the concrete, and striping is permanent until the next cleaning blends it. Add hose, gas, and four hours of your Saturday and the math stops working around the 500 sq ft mark.
But if you own the machine already, use the 25 degree tip, keep it 8 to 12 inches off the slab, and overlap every pass by half. And stay off anything painted.
