We cleaned a 28-panel array on Talbot Street last March. Output had dropped 19% from peak. The owner thought one of the inverters was failing. Why Point Loma arrays soil faster than inland systems
The marine layer here carries salt aerosol. We have measured visible salt crust on coastal-facing panels six weeks after a rain. The salt does two things. First, it acts as a sticky surface that traps everything else: pollen, eucalyptus oil from the older trees along Sunset Cliffs, fine sand off Ocean Beach. Second, the salt itself reflects and refracts incoming light, which costs you watts even when the panels look clean from the ground.

- 20 panels or fewer on a single-story home with safe roof access: $200 to $275
- 20 to 35 panels on a two-story coastal home: $300 to $450

How we clean coastal arrays
We use a soft-bristle solar brush on a telescoping pole and a deionized water rinse. No detergents. No tap water. Tap water leaves mineral spots when it dries on hot glass. DI water rinses clean and evaporates without residue.
We do not pressure wash solar panels. Manufacturer warranties from LG, REC, Panasonic, and SunPower all specifically prohibit pressure washing. We have seen seal failures around junction boxes after pressure cleaning. Once water gets under the backsheet, you are looking at panel replacement, not panel cleaning.
The output loss is real
We test before and after. Most Point Loma arrays show 12% to 22% output loss between cleanings. We covered the methodology in our solar output testing post. Bird issues in Point Loma
The seagull and pigeon populations near Liberty Station and the Naval Cemetery area drop more on rooftops than we see in inland neighborhoods. Bird residue on panels is acidic and bakes into the anti-reflective coating if left through summer. We see permanent etching on panels that have not been cleaned in two years.
