Solar Panel Cleaning in Point Loma, San Diego

Solar panel cleaning in Point Loma costs $12 to $18 per panel for residential arrays, with most homes between Catalina Boulevard and Sunset Cliffs running $200 to $350 per cleaning. Salt air builds up faster on coastal arrays than inland ones, so we clean Point Loma systems every 6 months instead of the 12-month interval we run in El Cajon or Santee.

We cleaned a 28-panel array on Talbot Street last March. Output had dropped 19% from peak. The owner thought one of the inverters was failing. We pulled string data from his Enphase system before the cleaning, ran a deionized water rinse, and watched output climb back to within 2% of nameplate within an hour of the sun hitting clean glass.

Why Point Loma arrays soil faster than inland systems

The marine layer here carries salt aerosol. We have measured visible salt crust on coastal-facing panels six weeks after a rain. The salt does two things. First, it acts as a sticky surface that traps everything else: pollen, eucalyptus oil from the older trees along Sunset Cliffs, fine sand off Ocean Beach. Second, the salt itself reflects and refracts incoming light, which costs you watts even when the panels look clean from the ground.

We documented the salt air problem on coastal stucco in this post about Sunset Cliffs and La Playa stucco failures. The same atmospheric chemistry that wrecks stucco accelerates solar soiling.

What we charge in Point Loma

Pricing depends on panel count, roof pitch, and access:

  • 20 panels or fewer on a single-story home with safe roof access: $200 to $275
  • 20 to 35 panels on a two-story coastal home: $300 to $450
  • Steep pitch or low-eave clearance requiring fall protection: add $75 to $150

How we clean coastal arrays

We use a soft-bristle solar brush on a telescoping pole and a deionized water rinse. No detergents. No tap water. Tap water leaves mineral spots when it dries on hot glass. DI water rinses clean and evaporates without residue.

We do not pressure wash solar panels. Manufacturer warranties from LG, REC, Panasonic, and SunPower all specifically prohibit pressure washing. We have seen seal failures around junction boxes after pressure cleaning. Once water gets under the backsheet, you are looking at panel replacement, not panel cleaning.

The output loss is real

We test before and after. Most Point Loma arrays show 12% to 22% output loss between cleanings. We covered the methodology in our solar output testing post. On a 7 kW system in Point Loma producing roughly 11,500 kWh per year, a 15% soiling loss costs about $450 in lost generation at SDG&E rates. Two cleanings per year at $250 each pays for itself.

Bird issues in Point Loma

The seagull and pigeon populations near Liberty Station and the Naval Cemetery area drop more on rooftops than we see in inland neighborhoods. Bird residue on panels is acidic and bakes into the anti-reflective coating if left through summer. We see permanent etching on panels that have not been cleaned in two years.

Cleaning frequency for Point Loma homes

Standard recommendation across San Diego is once a year. Coastal Point Loma is different. We tell customers between Cabrillo Memorial and Shelter Island to clean every 6 months. Customers further inland near Midway can stretch to 9 months. Anyone with a clear salt crust on the panels within weeks of a rain is on a 6-month cycle, no exception.

Our broader solar panel cleaning service page covers technical details, and our La Jolla solar cleaning page covers the coast a few miles north.

Scheduling and access

We service Point Loma Tuesday through Friday. The wind picks up in the afternoon along the peninsula, so we book morning slots before 11 AM whenever possible. If your roof has a 6/12 pitch or steeper, we set up fall protection before anyone goes up.
