How do you clean gutters from the ground with water-fed poles?
Water fed poles clean gutters from the ground using a carbon fiber pole, a curved gutter head, and filtered water pushed at 60 to 100 PSI. They reach single story runs and most second story eaves up to about 30 feet. Packed debris still needs vacuum extraction or hand removal from a ladder.
We bought our first water fed pole setup for windows and started using it on gutters within a month. The reason was simple. Fewer ladder sets means fewer holes punched in soft fascia, and San Diego has a lot of 1920s fascia board that will not take a ladder foot twice.
What the setup actually is
A carbon fiber pole in 4 to 8 foot sections, a hose running up the inside, and a head at the top. For windows the head is a brush with jets. For gutters it is a rigid curved nozzle that hooks over the lip and fires back down the trough, or a camera head if you want to see what you are doing before you commit.
Water goes through a resin filter first. Deionized water dries without spotting, which matters on the windows under the gutter more than on the gutter itself.
Pressure is low. Somewhere between 60 and 100 PSI at the head, which is garden hose pressure with a restrictor, not pressure washer pressure. Nobody should be putting 3000 PSI into a seamless aluminum gutter. The seams let go.

Water-fed pole vs ladder vs gutter vacuum
| Method | Best for | Max practical reach | Weakness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water fed pole | Loose leaf, sediment, light grit | ~30 ft | Pushes wet debris into downspouts |
| Gutter vacuum | Dry packed debris, seed pods | ~40 ft with poles | Poor on wet compacted mats |
| Ladder and hand removal | Root mats, nests, standing water | Whatever you can safely set | Slow, and hard on fascia |
Most of our gutter jobs use two of the three. Vacuum first to pull the bulk out dry, then the pole to flush the trough and the drops.
What water-fed poles will not do
They will not clear a downspout elbow that has already set up. On a Talmadge job off Euclid we flushed a 60 foot run in nine minutes and then spent 40 minutes on one drop where jacaranda seed pods had compacted into a plug about 18 inches down. That came out with a plumber snake and a bucket underneath.
They also will not tell you the truth about your gutter pitch. Standing water in a trough is a hanger problem, not a debris problem, and no amount of flushing fixes it. We take a photo and tell people to call a gutter installer.
And they make a mess if you flush before you extract. Wet sludge blown down a downspout is how you turn a 90 minute job into a two visit job.
When we still put a ladder up
Anything over 30 feet. Anything with moss rooted into the trough. Anything where the gutter guard has to come off, which on the newer Kensington and Talmadge remodels is most of them, because the mesh screws down and no pole is going to back out a screw.
Steep tile roofs get the pole every time. A ladder against a barrel tile edge cracks tile, and matching an original 1926 tile costs more than the whole gutter cleaning.
What ground based gutter cleaning costs in San Diego
Single story home with 100 to 150 linear feet of gutter runs $150 to $250 and takes 60 to 90 minutes. Two story goes $250 to $400. Add $25 to $50 per clogged downspout that needs snaking, and another $75 to $150 if the gutter guards have to be pulled and reinstalled.
The number that surprises people is frequency. Twice a year is the honest answer for most of the city, three times if a pepper tree or eucalyptus sits over the roofline. Our coastal jobs in Point Loma and Pacific Beach need less debris clearing but more rinsing, because salt film sets up on the outside face of the gutter and dulls the finish.
Rain matters less here than tree canopy. San Diego averages under 11 inches a year, so a clogged gutter often sits full and dry for months before anybody notices, and by then the debris has composted into a mat that no pole is getting out.
Full scope is on our window and gutter cleaning page, and the neighborhood specifics are covered under Kensington gutter cleaning. Costs for pairing gutters with window work are broken out in what window and gutter cleaning costs.
One last note on the poles themselves. Carbon fiber sections above 25 feet flex enough that placing the head accurately gets genuinely hard in any wind, and afternoon onshore breeze off the bay picks up around 2pm most days. We schedule the tall work for mornings.
