What is the best way to pressure wash a driveway?
The best way to pressure wash a driveway is a 20 inch surface cleaner running about 3000 PSI at 4 GPM. It cleans evenly, avoids the striping a bare wand leaves, and finishes a 500 sq ft slab in roughly 45 to 60 minutes. A wand is only for edges and tight corners.
We have watched a lot of homeowners rent a 3000 PSI machine, grab the wand, and leave a zebra pattern in the slab. It happens in about four seconds on soft concrete.

Surface cleaner vs wand: how do they compare on concrete?
| Factor | 20 inch surface cleaner | Wand with 25 degree tip |
|---|---|---|
| Typical PSI | 3000 | 3000 to 4000 |
| Flow | 4 GPM | 2.5 to 4 GPM |
| 500 sq ft driveway | 45 to 60 min | 90 to 120 min |
| Striping risk | Low | High on old concrete |
| Best use | Open slabs, walkways | Edges, steps, corners |
The spinning bar spreads the same water across a wider path. That is the whole trick.
Why does older San Diego concrete etch so easily?
Many driveways in North Park, Hillcrest, and Talmadge were poured in the 1920s through the 1940s. The surface paste is thin and the aggregate sits close to the top.
A zero degree tip or a wand held too close will cut a visible line into that slab. You cannot undo it.
So on those drives we stay on the surface cleaner, keep the pass speed slow and even, and let a detergent dwell do the lifting on algae. Shaded driveways under the mature trees in Kensington green up fast once the marine layer settles in during May and June.
What about oil and rust stains?
Pressure does not remove either one. Oil needs a degreaser and hot water around 180 degrees, and it adds $75 to $150 to a job. Rust from a wrought iron gate needs an acid-based treatment.
We use the wand for those spots, at a lower standoff distance, and finish with the surface cleaner so the slab dries one even color.
How much does it cost to have a driveway pressure washed?
A typical 400 to 700 sq ft concrete driveway runs $150 to $300 in San Diego. Pavers that need joint sand replaced run $250 to $450. Stained or very shaded slabs land at the top of the range.
If you would rather skip the rental and the etch risk, see our pressure washing page or the North Park driveway cleaning page for how we price a typical block.
If we cleaned your driveway, a Google review that names the neighborhood and the surface helps the next homeowner find us.
