How Often Should You Clean Gutters in San Diego?
Our standard recommendation depends on what is hanging over the roof. Homes with no overhanging trees can usually get away with one cleaning per year, typically in late fall after the santa ana winds settle. Homes under jacaranda, eucalyptus, or Torrey pine need it twice a year minimum. Homes near palm trees need three visits because palm fronds shed constantly and one heavy frond can block a downspout overnight.
If you live in coastal neighborhoods like Point Loma or Pacific Beach, add a winter check for salt corrosion on older aluminum gutters. The seams go before the runs do.

Typical ranges we see across our jobs: single-story homes between 1,200 and 1,800 square feet run $150 to $225. Two-story homes between 2,000 and 2,800 square feet run $250 to $400. Large two-story homes with complex rooflines or multiple years of debris can hit $400 to $600. Add $50 to $100 for downspout flushing if they have not been cleared in years.

If you have a single-story home with accessible gutters and a sturdy ladder, gutter cleaning is a reasonable DIY project. The work itself is tedious but not technical.
Two-story homes are a different story. Falls from 20-plus feet cause most home-improvement injuries. We carry insurance specifically because this work is risky even for crews that do it every day.

- Walk the property and note tree coverage, gutter condition, and any obvious sagging or separation at the hangers
- Scoop debris by hand or with a gutter scoop into a bucket rather than dropping it on the planting beds below
- Flush the full gutter run with water to check for blockages and verify pitch toward the downspouts
- Flush each downspout and listen for water hitting the splash block at the bottom
- Bag the debris and haul it off site
