How much do people charge to clean solar panels in California?

Solar panel cleaning in California runs $10 to $25 per panel for residential systems, or $150 to $450 per visit for a typical 20 to 24 panel home array. Commercial and ground-mount work prices by kW at $5 to $12 per kW. San Diego rates trend slightly above the state average because of harder mineral content in the rinse water.

We clean solar across San Diego County every week. The question we get more than any other is about price.

Residential pricing in California, by panel count

The number that matters is panels, not square footage. A panel takes the same time to clean whether it sits on a Carlsbad two-story or a Normal Heights single-story. Roof pitch and access drive the variance, not house size.

System sizePanel countTypical price range
Small residential10 to 16 panels$150 to $275
Standard residential18 to 24 panels$220 to $400
Large residential26 to 36 panels$325 to $625
Ground-mount or estate40+ panels$0.40 to $0.85 per watt installed

Our crew quoted 19 solar jobs in March 2026. The median landed at $285 for a 22-panel rooftop in Kensington.

Why San Diego runs higher than Sacramento or Fresno

Two reasons. Salt air builds a mineral film on coastal arrays from Encinitas down through Coronado. That film does not rinse with hose pressure. We run deionized water through a soft brush at 80 PSI, which costs more per gallon than the tap-fed rinse used inland.

The second reason is roof pitch. A lot of San Diego solar sits on 6:12 to 9:12 tile roofs. Tile means walk-board setup, not just a ladder. That adds 30 to 45 minutes per job.

What homeowners ask before booking

Can I clean solar panels myself?

Yes, with two warnings. Hose water in San Diego is hard. It leaves a calcium spot when it dries on the glass, and that spot blocks light the same way bird droppings do. The second warning is roof safety. Two of every three calls we get from owners who tried it themselves involve a slipped tile or a cracked microinverter housing.

Can you use vinegar to clean solar panels?

No. The acid eats the anti-reflective coating on the glass. The coating is what lets the panel pull morning and late-afternoon light. Once it goes, output drops 3 to 5% permanently. We use a panel-rated soap at a 1:120 dilution and rinse with deionized water.

How often should solar panels be cleaned in California?

Coastal homes: every 12 to 14 months. Inland Poway, Escondido, Ramona: every 18 to 24 months. Construction-adjacent or under heavy tree cover: every 6 to 9 months.

Commercial and ground-mount pricing

We bid commercial by kW. Most of our commercial solar work in San Diego County falls between $5 and $12 per kW per visit. A 50 kW rooftop array typically lands at $400 to $650. Ground-mount with row access drops the per-kW price because we can run a soft-brush array on a boom.

One Otay Mesa warehouse job last fall, 280 kW, came in at $1,920 quarterly. The owner had skipped cleaning for 22 months. Pre-clean output was running 11.4% below nameplate. After cleaning, monitoring showed a 9.8% recovery in three days.

What drives a higher quote

  • Tile roof versus comp shingle (add 15% to 25%)
  • Two-story access or steep pitch over 7:12
  • Heavy pigeon residue or nesting under the array
  • Distance from a hose bib that produces 3+ gallons per minute
  • Recent wildfire ash within 60 days

And what does not drive it: house value, neighborhood, panel brand. A SunPower panel cleans the same as a Q Cells panel.

What you should not pay for

Pressure washing of panels. We see this in quotes from general pressure washing companies that added solar to their list without learning the work. Direct pressure on the glass voids most panel warranties and forces water under the j-box seal. If a quote mentions PSI on the panels, get a different quote.

If you want a real number for your roof, we can walk it and price it. Our solar panel cleaning service page covers what is included. For pricing on related work, see the output testing we ran last quarter and our cleaning frequency guide.

If we cleaned your array in North Park, Kensington, La Jolla, or anywhere else in San Diego County, we would appreciate a Google review that mentions the neighborhood and the system size.
