Driveway and Paver Cleaning in South Park, San Diego

Driveway cleaning in South Park runs $150 to $300 for a standard concrete drive and $150 to $350 for pavers, with joint re-sanding adding $75 to $150. Most driveways off Fern, Beech, and Juniper take 45 to 90 minutes with a 20 inch surface cleaner at 3000 PSI and 4 GPM.

South Park driveways are older and narrower than almost anything else we clean in San Diego. A lot of the block between Fern Street and 30th was built out in the 1920s, so we are usually working on a single width concrete strip poured decades ago, sometimes with a brick or paver apron added later by a homeowner.

That mix is the whole job. Old concrete and newer pavers on the same driveway do not take the same pressure.

What we do differently on old South Park concrete

We run a 20 inch surface cleaner at 3000 PSI on sound concrete. On the pre-war pours around Grape Street Park where the aggregate is already exposed, we back off to about 2200 PSI and slow the pass down instead, because pushing more pressure at worn concrete just pulls more sand out of the surface and leaves wand stripes you can read from the sidewalk.

Pavers get treated as a separate job. We clean at low pressure, pull the loose joint sand out with the rinse, then re-sand with polymeric sand and set it. Skipping the re-sand is how pavers start shifting and how weeds come back in six weeks.

The two stains that show up on every South Park block

Oil under the carport and rust bleed off wrought iron gates. Neither one comes off with pressure.

Oil needs a degreaser and hot water at 180 degrees with dwell time, usually two passes. Rust needs an oxalic acid treatment and a neutralizing rinse. Either one adds $75 to $250 depending on how long it has been sitting. We had a job off Juniper last spring where a transmission leak had soaked in over two rainy seasons, and the stains ate 40 minutes after the driveway itself was already done in under an hour.

Jacaranda season and the canyon lots

The jacarandas along the South Park side streets drop blossoms from late May into July, and they stain concrete purple-brown once the marine layer keeps them damp overnight. We clean a lot of driveways in August for exactly that reason.

Access is the other South Park variable. On the canyon edge lots dropping toward Switzer Canyon we often cannot get the truck within 100 feet of the work, so that is extra hose and a longer day. We tell people that up front rather than surprising them on the invoice.

Bundling the driveway with the front walkway and back patio on one trip usually runs 15 to 20 percent under three separate visits. Staging the rig and running hose is the expensive part, not the trigger time.

If you want the house exterior handled too, that is covered on our South Park pressure washing page and stucco gets a low pressure wash instead, described under soft washing. Full surface list is on the pressure washing page, and the white haze question that comes up on almost every paver quote is answered in our post on efflorescence on San Diego pavers.

We run South Park regularly alongside Golden Hill and Bankers Hill, so scheduling a weekday morning there is rarely a problem. If we cleaned your driveway in South Park, mentioning the street and the surface in a Google review helps more neighbors find us than anything else we do.
